1985 Herreshoff Cat Ketch
"The Herreshoff 38 is built with care and craftsmanship that brings high technology to the forefront of yacht design. From stem to stern she represents "state of the art" design and construction. The fiberglass/Airex hull construction results in one of the strongest yet lightest hulls available in cruising sailboats today. Her aerodynamically efficient, elliptically shaped, unstayed carbon fiber masts reduce weight aloft while enhancing performance through flexibility and automatic sail shaping.
The Herreshoff 38 is one of the most comfortable sailing vessels in her size range. Her Cat Ketch rig is a pleasure to handle. With 42 percent ballast to weight ratio, low center of effort and long waterline, she sails upright and smoothly. She is a virtually effortless yacht to sail, with no winches, vangs, stays or any other hardware associated with genoas or head sails."

The first impression as you step below on the boat is that there is really good headroom and it's easy to move through the boat. Moving forward there is a stateroom forward with an offset double berth to port. There is a large double hanging locker to starboard and a head to port aft of the berth. There is a mahogany door that separates this forward cabin from the main saloon.
In the main saloon there is a U-shaped dinette to port and two barrel chairs to starboard.
There is Cruisair air conditioning in this area. All of the hull and lockers are lined with solid Honduras mahogany. The galley is aft to starboard and has good ventilation.
There is an aft quarter cabin with a head and shower and a double berth.
The boat is very easy to move about in and the workmanship is good. There are several bronze opening ports and there is no sign of any leaking around them.

The Herreshoff Cat Ketch is a yacht designed by Halsey Herreschoff and built by John R. Newton. It incorporates traditional values with modern technology.
John Newton started in yacht building over thirty years ago as the founder and owner of the firm known for building such world renowned designs as the Grand Banks and the Alaskan Trawlers. His experience includes building hundreds of custom sailboats and a lifetime of sailing. In 1975 John relocated in Honduras to start a new company with his sons, thus continuing a tradition of custom yacht building into the third generation of the Newton family. Today, Cat Ketch Corporation is one of the largest American owned and operated yacht builders outside the continental United States.
In 1979 Halsey Herreschoff and John Newton first discussed the Herroschoff Cat Ketch concept. The Cat Ketch was, of course, a family rig to Halsey. Reconized as a leader in high technology yacht designs. Halsey and his family had been designing, building and sailing Cat Ketches for over 100 years. Combining these years of experience and traditions of excellance John and Halsey created the Herroschoff Cat Ketch line of yachts endowed with the unique characteristics which make them FAST AND EASY.
One of the most sophisticated yet deceptively simple elements of the Herroschoff Cat Ketches is the versitility and ease of handling. The advantages of this modern rig are:
*The split sail plan with its separated centers of effort maximizes balance and control over a wide range of conditions.
*The self tending sails permit the performance of the most difficult maneuvers with ease.
*The single wishbone booms balance the forces on the sails, reducing the loads on the sheets and eliminating the need for vangs, winches and their associated complexities. Jiffy Reefing allows rapid reefing without sail changes or loss of control.
*The unstayed elliptical carbon fiber masts lighter, saving weight aloft. They are aerodynamically cleaner, reducing parastic drag. They are flexible like a bird's wing, absorbing sudden gusts and reducing the heeling moment, automatically adjusting the sails to the optimum shape for existing conditions.
Complementing the versitile rig the Herroschoff Cat Ketch has a slippery, light displacement hull of fin keel/skeg rudder configuration. Here are some of the characteristics that make these hulls superior performers:
*Light displacement causes the boat to move smartly with a moderately sized, easily handled rig. The boat achieves hull speed quickly, even in light air. Her bouyance keeps occupants dry and safe in any sea.
*The low wetted surface makes her fast and responsive.
*The unusally long waterline results in higher hull speeds and easier motion.
* the fin keel/skeg rudder configuration provides quick precise control for sailing in close quarters and the stable tracking essential at sea.
*A moderate shoal draft keel maintains performance while allowing access to cruising areas of limited depth.
The Herroschoff Cat Ketch displays traditional lines and enduring style. Only the finest quality materials and workmanship are utilized. For example:
*Fiberglass Airex* core sandwich construction produces the lightest and most rugged hull structure possible. The Airex* core in addition to superior impact strength and rigidity also provides excellant insulation against heat, cold, noise and condensation.
*The classic looks are accented by teak handrails and trim. The Awl-Grip* exterior finish is the most beautiful and durable on the market.
*Wide uncluttered decks make sailing safe and comfortable.
*The generous use of opening portlights and large frosted hatches produce light and airy interiors.
*The rich wood paneled interiors feature extensive use of finely, handcrafted cabinetry in the owner's choice of selected hardwoods.
*Brass lighting accessories accentuate the warmth while top-of-the-line galley and head fixtures add the final touch of quality.
*Customized interiors reflect the owner's personal requirements.
Herroschoff Cat Ketches are "fast and easy in the Herroschoff tradition"
